On 6th March, 1915, the 1st North Staffordshire battalion of 17 Brigade, 6th Division moved into trenches at Erquinghem near Armentières where they remained until relieved on 13th March. Their first four days here were relatively quiet but on 10th March, a few miles to the south, the Battle of Neuve Chapelle began, which upped the tempo along most of the front line a few miles either side of the village. At Erquinghem, 1st North Staffordshire sustained 131 casualties as a result of a marked increase in artillery and small arms fire as well as aggressive patrolling by both sides. One of those from the battalion who was killed was Frederick Mann on 12th March.
